The Indo-Nepal border has long been plagued by man-animal conflict. There is a need to differentiate between the population and the forest but despite years of efforts, the line between them has not been drawn yet. However, the chances are now good for the area (up to 50 kilometres adjoining the forest) to be equipped with solar fencing and thorny wires at the cost of Rs 80 million, according to a TOI report.”Around 500 villages of Shravasti and Balrampur are situated near Sohelwa and the inhabitants in these villages are frequently visiting the forest. The proposal for wiring was sent to the government four years ago but now the chances of approval looks bright. Moreover, the wildlife is targeted by smugglers as well,” the report added.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has reportedly shown interest in the projects related to the forest areas. After recently visiting Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary in Bahraich, the minster also made announcements about several projects for the development of the forest.
Manish Mittal, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Sohelwa, confirmed the proposal may now be approved by the government.
