Karnataka based company Aequs Aerospace has got a big contract with Airbus, the European aircraft maker to supply titanium components as it ramps up production of its A320neo aircraft for global consumption. This is the first time an Indian company is getting the contract to manufacture critical components for Airbus. Aequs will supply 1,00,000 machined parts to be manufactured in Belagavi (earlier Belgaum).
Here it should be noted that Airbus procures 80 per cent of the components that goes into its planes from numerous vendors across the globe. The company has said that the contribution from Asia, particularly India has been rising. Sourcing volumes from India have grown by 16 times in the past decade. Procurement from India – information technology, customer support and components – was $500 million (Rs 3,335 crore) in 2015 and is expected to grow to $2 billion in 2020.
India has been quite vocal about making this country a defence manufacturing base and many global companies are showing interest to come and manufacture strategic defence electronics in the country. This is a big achievement for Aequs to win a contract with Airbus to supply components.
