Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard feels that smaller three-seater electric cars will dominate India’s electric mobility market in future
The Indian government needs to do more to facilitate transition towards electric cars from gasoline cars, said Martin Eberhard, founder and original chairman & CEO, Tesla.
While the Indian government provides subsidy to the consumers buying electric cars, there is no adequate ecosystem to support widespread use of electric vehicles.
Electric cars have achieved a lot globally but there is a long way to go, said Eberhard, and he also noted that there cannot be a one car for all market solution in electric cars, ET reported.
He feels that smaller three-seater electric cars will dominate India’s electric mobility market in the future.
EVs may not help reduce traffics snarls
Eberhard pitched electric vehicles as a means to address vehicular pollution, but he said that replacing gasoline cars with electric vehicles may not help reduce traffic snarls in cities.
“Now, we can debate about when it happens. However, in a city like Delhi, whether replacing gasoline cars with electric cars can be the solution. Even if you replace all gasoline cars with electric, traffic snarls will still be there,” ET quoted Eberhard as saying.
Eberhard’s present company, Tiveni, is working on building electric power trains.
He was one of the speakers at the Global Business Summit in New Delhi. Industry leaders participating in a discussion on ‘Driving Disruption: Unleashing the Next Wave of Radical Transformation’ said that India’s growing transportation needs could be addressed through innovations in electric mobility across categories such as cars, flying vehicles and hyperloop.
