India Exported Electronics Goods Worth Rs 8,806 Crore During December 2020

Mobile handsets were the highest contributor with Rs 3,061 Crore (35 per cent) in the electronic goods exports of Rs 8,806 Crore for the month of December 2020

The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) noted that the overall electronics goods exports reached to a level of Rs 8,806 Crore in the month of December 2020. The Association said that it is pleased to share that industry is overcoming the unprecedented challenges of COVID and is on a path of regaining the momentum as envisaged in NPE 2019.

“The Mobile handset manufacturing industry is continuing its growth juggernaut and its historic journey to meet its objective of becoming the world’s No. 1 manufacturing destination in sync with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision. It may be noted that backed by the PLI scheme, during the covid period industry has made substantial investments of more than Rs 2000 Crores,” said Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA.

“ElectronicGoods export for the current year have crossed 50,000 Crore mark despite COVID-19 pandemic and complete washout of production for 45 days . The mobile handset industry has catered to the domestic demand during the pandemic as well as exports of more than Rs.14000 Crores till December 2020,” added Mohindroo.

Mobile phones were the highest contributor in the segment comprising of 35 per cent of the value with an export value of IRs 3,061 Crore which is 50 per cent higher than December 2019. The rollout of the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP)
scheme, as per ICEA, can also help boost the exports by specific process of determining the rates and identifying the product lines.

The reducing of custom duties and a scheme to refund to the exporters the embedded central, state and local duties and taxes can act as a key contributor in achieving the mobile phone export of USD 110 Bn as per NPE 2019 target.

Out of Rs 1.15 trillion worth of electronics components that India imported in 2019-20, 37 per cent were imported from China. Sanjay Dhotre, minister of State for Communications and Electronics and IT, had revealed these numbers in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

The minister, citing data obtained from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), had noted that India exported smartphone components worth Rs 56,039 crore during 2019-20. Out of the total amount, smartphone components worth Rs 25,441 crore were exported from China.
