Recently government of India has put off the move to levy tax on imports of touch panels.Earlier, smartphone bigwigs like Samsung Electronics had asked the government to delay the plan to such new imported components under a phased plan to boost local manufacturing.
And considering industry demands, the tariff which was supposed to kick in from February has been delayed.
As per information, the new tariff is likely to be levied from April 2020 if the Ministry of Finance approves Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MEITY) proposal for the same. Samsung had informed the government that it will not make two of its high-end models in the country because of the new tariff.
The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), had also asked the government to reconsider the tariffs on new components, and allow local manufacturing to develop in a timely manner.
