Samsung Electronics overtook Intel and topped with USD 20.958 billion in sales, up 13.0 percent from the previous quarter. Samsung is also the number one DRAM and NAND supplier
Global semiconductor revenue climbed above $150 billion in Q3 of this fiscal, rising 7.6 percent from the previous quarter, as per research firm Omdia’s report.
Samsung Electronics overtook Intel to claim the number one spot in the rankings for the quarter
Omdia explained that third-quarter sales were led by seasonal demand, strong memory sales, and chip shortages. However, the growth rate was slightly less than the annual average of 7.9% from 2002 to last year.
The primary driver of the growth, as per the report, was the memory sector. Memory (DRAM, NAND and NOR) makes up 29 percent of all semiconductor revenue. This segment grew 12 percent quarter-over-quarter in Q3 2021.
In particular, the NAND flash market significantly expanded. NAND sales in the third quarter amounted to USD 18.7 billion, up 13.8 percent from USD 16.4 billion in the second quarter.
Omdia said, “The sales of display driver (DDI, 13 percent) and image sensor (17 percent) products also significantly increased, but memory market is about five times larger in terms of size.”

Intel, the largest MPU maker, was limited as overall MPU revenue in Q3 2021 was nearly flat, up just 0.5 percent.
Memory-focused semiconductor firms (Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology) made up three of the top four semiconductor firms in Q3 2021 and continue to dominate the quarterly revenue rankings.
