Monday, February 10, 2014: In a bid to enhance border security and surveillance and increase protection of critical infrastructure, Bharat Electronics Limited has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Textron Systems Corporation. As per the deal, BEL will supply the Textron Systems MicroObserver Unattended Ground Sensor (UGS) system to security agencies in India.
The deal was signed during the Defexpo 2014. This year was the eighth edition of Land, Naval, and Internal Homeland Security Systems Exhibition. According to online reports, Ian Walsh, Textron Defense Systems’ senior vice president and general manager, said, “We’re looking forward to working with BEL to bring this critical surveillance system to Indian government agencies that will benefit from its wide range of proven capabilities.”
Explaining the idea behind the deal, PC Jain, director of marketing, BEL, said, “Bharat Electronics Limited expects the benefits of this system to filter down to various agencies responsible for the management of the Indian borders, thus fulfilling our overall objective of bringing in cutting-edge technologies to India.” The MicroObserver UGS system doesn’t just show a single detection alarm but provides actionable intelligence. It displays the position, direction, and speed of personnel and vehicle threats, that makes it easier for the border management agencies to locate, identify and intercept them.
