Apple CEO Tim Cook today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his official residence in New Delhi and discussed the possibilites of manufacturing and retailing in the country. The prime minister spoke to Cook about ‘Digital India’ initiative said there are three areas that the government is looking at as priority viz e-education, health and increasing farmers’ income.
Industry watchers were eagerly waiting for some announcement from Cook about manufacturing in the country, but there has been no such solid time frame that Apple CEO has put in terms of starting manufacturing in the country. But Cook definitely spoke about manufacturing possibilites in the country.
Here it should be noted that Apple wanted to seel refurbished iPhones in the country but the government has rejected the proposal stating that it will be hazardous to allow such a move and they would rather want Apple to start manufacturing in the country.
A government statement said that Cook shared Apple Inc’s future plans for India. “He spoke of the possibilities of manufacturing and retailing in India. He appreciated the breadth of young talent in India, and said the youth have significant skills which Apple would like to tap,” the statement said. He appreciated the Prime Minister’s initiatives in ‘ease of doing business’ and congratulated him on the recent election results, the statement added.
