  • RE100 (renewable electricity) realization and usage of greener energy sources are major contributors
  • The company was recently recognized as the ‘Pioneer in large-scale adoption of green factory buildings’ by the Indian Green Building Council

In the latest update from the sustainability front, ABB India announced that it has achieved an 81.6% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions versus its 2019 baseline. The company believes that primarily, its investment into renewable energy sources and the realization of RE100 across its 5 manufacturing locations has aided the emission reduction. Five ABB locations across India – Nelamangala, Peenya, Maneja, Nashik, and Faridabad – are certified as ‘Green Factory Buildings’ by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

The company also claimed to have enhanced water recyclability by around 12% compared to the 2019 baseline and aims to become water neutral/positive across all locations by 2025. It said that presently, it recycles around 95% of the waste generated across all its facilities to realise the long-term sustainability targets of zero waste to landfill.

After recently receiving a ‘strong’ rating in the ESG risk assessment by CRISIL, and with its global 2030 sustainability strategy, ABB said that it is actively enabling a low-carbon society as well as working with its customers and suppliers to implement sustainable practices across its value chain and the lifecycle of its products and solutions.

ABB India’s Country Head and MD, Sanjeev Sharma remarked: “We’ve been making concrete efforts towards achieving the 2030 sustainability goals. Double-digit reduction of our own GHG emissions, the realization of RE100 and Green factory building certifications for all our manufacturing locations are significant milestones in our journey towards sustainability. They reassure us of the positive impact we can make towards creating a resource-efficient and low-carbon future.”

As per the company, it implemented energy-efficient and innovative solutions in a phased manner across its decades-old locations pan-India, without disrupting its ongoing operations. Green power utilisation from in-house solar panels, green power purchase from third parties through power purchase agreements (PPA) and procurement of International Renewable Energy Certificates (IREC), AI-enabled building automation technology, energy-efficient lighting, HVAC solutions, and measurement analytics products are some of its efforts in this direction.

Over 130 years old ABB is a Switzerland-headquartered technology player in electrification and automation, which works to enable a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. The company’s solutions claim to connect engineering know-how and software to optimize how things are manufactured, moved, powered and operated. ABB has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
