SMEV had earlier hinted towards absence of EV charging infrastructure as a major hindrance stopping the growth of the sector. These 17,000 EV charging points will be setup across petrol pumps in India
Indian Oil Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) have plans to setup 10,000 and 7,000 EV charging points, respectively. These EV charging points are going to be setup across petrol pumps operated by the two in India.
The former has already collaborated with the likes of Tata Power, REIL, Power Grid Corporation of India, NTPC, Fortum, Hyundai, Tech Mahindra, BHEL and Ola for setting up EV chargers at existing petrol and diesel filling stations.
“EV charging infrastructure is one of the five focused segments that BPCL is working on along with petchem, gas, consumer retailing, renewables and biofuels that will serve the energy needs of the nation,” said Arun Kumar Singh, chairman and managing director, Bharat Petroleum.
According to the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), EV sales in India declined by 19.91 per cent in FY2020-21 (April 2020 to April 2021) as compared to the financial year 2019 -2020. As per SMEV, a total of 2,36,802 electric vehicles were sold in India in the last financial year. The number was 2,95,683 units in FY2019-2020.
