Electronic dry cabinet, also called humidity cabinet, moisture proof cabinet, desiccant dry cabinet or dry box, is used for storage of surface mount electronic components prior to circuit board assembly, to prevent water absorption that could flash into steam during soldering, which destroy the components.
Tuesday, April 23, 2013: Moisture related problems in electronic assemblies and components cause post-reflow ‘popcorning’, laminate melting and other defects. Dry cabinets have proved to be an effective solution to these issues. They not only protect but some models can also restore impaired moisture sensitive devices (MSDs) with a combination of ultra low humidity and mild heating temperatures. These factors also prevent damage to the heat susceptible component enclosures—tapes, trays and reels—as well as plastics and films used in assemblies. The desiccant inside the cabinets absorbs trapped moisture inside and is self-replenishing.
Electronic dry boxes contain a small peltier cooler, which removes moisture from the air by condensing it out. A control dial is usually provided that permits the user rough adjustment of the humidity level. More sophisticated designs link the cooler to a settable digital hygrometer, allowing very precise humidity level control.
