Saturday, September 07, 2013: While attempting to rank the top test and measurement (T&M) brands available in India, we faced certain challenges since each company has its own strengths and is a leader in a specific domain within T&M. While Agilent Technologies is a leader in aerospace and defence, wireless, semiconductor, automotive, etc., Anritsu Pte Ltd India and Rohde & Schwarz lead in telecom and wireless, communitation, and Tektronix in oscilloscopes. Then there is Fluke Corporation, a leading company in multimeters, and Goodwill, a strong player in the educational sector. Hence, we tried to judge these companies based on several aspects—turnover, market share, individual strength and brand popularity.
In our effort to rank the top T&M brands available in India, we conducted a survey in July 2013.
The challenges faced
A) Most companies in this domain are MNCs, hence, procuring their India sales figures was difficult.
B) Most companies that do not manufacture in India declined to share their India turnover.
C) Even, some Indian companies that manufacture locally, asked us not to publish their revenues.
D)There are also companies whose turnovers are a consolidated figure of their different businesses in India, which are not related to T&M. And there are companies that are only in the T&M domain. Comparing both the categories and deriving an unbiased result was challenging.
E) Some companies like Agilent Technologies could not share their total revenue for India, due to technical issues.
F) Many companies have not yet filed their balance sheets for FY 2011-12 with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), Government of India.
The methodology
A) We have ranked companies that manufacture T&M equipment in India or overseas, and whose brands are popular in India on the basis of their revenue for FY 2011-12, except Tektronix, whose 2011-12 revenue is yet not filed with MCA.
B) While half of the companies ranked here are exclusively into T&M equipment manufacturing, the other half are into multiple businesses in India, which has been indicated in their profiles.
C)The revenues of some companies are just a part of their total turnover in India, as the commissions achieved on sales of their products overseas are not included in this figure, or a part of their billing is not done in INR.
D) Some MNCs, like Agilent, do not report sales for individual business units.
E) Many companies could not be ranked as their revenue figures were not accessible. These companies also refused to share their revenue figures with us.
F) Revenue figures have been procured from the website of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), Government of India, and verified by the companies. Some figures were provided by the companies themselves.
G) Another survey was also conducted across India among the end users, distributors and EMS companies to gauge the popularity of the T&M equipment brands available in the country. This survey included both companies that manufacture in India and those that don’t (yet their T&M equipment brands are popular in India). A majority of these companies just conduct trading operations in India, either through distributors or direct sales offices. The results of this survey have been shared in the table on Page 61.
While both the surveys (on revenue and popularity) are by no means comprehensive, we request our readers to share their feedback and help us make these reports more useful.

Indigenous T&M Equipment manufacturers: A pat on the back |
Indian T&M industry comprises of both multinational and indigenous players. While major multinational companies have an edge as they offer high frequency equipment with high end technologies, it is commendable to see domestic manufacturers not only surviving the stiff competition, but also are leaders in different T&M product domains.Indian manufacturers including Aplab Ltd, Kusam Electrical Industries, Meco Instruments Pvt Ltd, Rishabh Instruments Pvt Ltd, Scientech Technologies Pvt Ltd, Scientific Mes-Technik Pvt Ltd, The Motwane Manufacturing Company have been serving the industry for years now, and are still going strong. Five of the Indian manufacturers (brands) have also bagged positions among the top 10 T&M brands listed on pg 61. As far as brand popularity is concerned, these indigenous manufacturers have also proved to be popular brands among the distributors and end users (see pg 61). |
