Monday, January 06, 2014: A surface mount or SMD LED is a light-emitting diode that is mounted and soldered onto a printed circuit board. An SMD LED has a wide viewing angle, since it does not have the standard LEDs’ epoxy enclosure that focuses the beam. SMD LEDs work well in outdoor displays because a large number of diodes can be arranged in tight groups of red, blue and green, generating a wide variety of colours.
LED lamps, on the other hand, offer a long service life and higher energy efficiency than compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). LEDs are now also clustered to provide more light and are mounted within diffuser lenses, which spread the light across a wider area.
In this section, we feature the new launches in the SMD LEDs and LED lamps space over the last eight months. However, companies like Everlight and Nichia have not launched any new SMD LEDs and LED lamps in this period.
