With a national manufacturing policy soon to be announced, India prepares to revamp its manufacturing setup, with the aim to emerge as a world class manufacturing hub. Realising the potential, various companies catering to different sectors, such as consumer and industrial electronics, telecom equipment, computers and solar energy, are on their way to expanding their existing facilities in India or are planning to set up new facilities to tap the huge opportunities in India. These activities in the manufacturing front will also boost the growth and business of many other sectors like tools and equipment, test and measurement devices, SMT and through-hole machines, etc.

The company will set up its manufacturing unit at Jhajjar (Haryana), and begin operations in April 2011, with an annual production capacity of an estimated 1,000,000 sets of air conditioners, 400,000 sets of washing machines and 25,000 sets of welding and cutting machines. Mass production will start in August 2012. With an investment of Rs 10 billion
(Rs 1000 crore), the facility will provide employment to 4000 people.

The company has set up its second refrigerator manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur, Chennai in November 2010. With an investment of
US$ 75 million, the facility has an installed capacity of 1.2 million units per annum and is providing employment to 500 people. The company has earmarked an investment of Rs 3.5 billion (Rs 350 crore) crore for the expansion of this facility over the next five years.

General Electric

Medical equipment, consumer appliances, energy and power generation plants

The company will invest Rs 2.25 billion (Rs 225 crore) to set up a multi-business manufacturing facility in India. The company’s energy business (wind, solar and gas) would be the principle user of the facility, more details of which will be announced soon. Construction of the facility is expected to start between July-September 2011, which will create more than 3000 jobs. The company will further invest Rs 9 billion
(Rs 900 crore) for its expansion. Besides this, GE also plans to invest in the fields of locomotive manufacturing and medical equipment in India.

PV modules and turnkey EPC service provider to other solar project developers in the country

The company will set up a plant in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, to produce purified silicon, cells and other components for solar PV facilities. The plant will have a capacity of 250 MW a year and will produce ingots, wafers, PV cells, modules and polysilicon. The first phase of the project will require an investment of Rs 13.7 billion (US$ 300 million) and will start production by 2012.
