India’s traditional PC market, which includes desktops, notebooks, and workstations, saw shipments reach 3.39 million units in Q2 2024, marking a 7.1% increase compared to the previous year, as reported by International Data Corporation (IDC).
Shipments include shipments to distribution channels or end-users. IDC also counted OEM sales under the company/brand under which they are sold.
According to the report, each category, desktop, notebook, and workstation, experienced growth of 5.9%, 7.4%, and 12.4% year-over-year, respectively.
Furthermore, in Q2 2024, the consumer segment experienced a significant 11.2% YoY increase, driven by strong demand across both online and offline channels. The e-tail channel alone thrived by 22.4% YoY.
Meanwhile, the commercial segment saw a 3.5% YoY rise, with notable growth in the SMB and LB segments, which increased by 12.4% and 33.1% YoY, respectively.
Among the market players, HP Inc. led both the commercial and consumer segments with shares of 33.5% and 29.7%, respectively, and dominated the notebook category with a 34.4% share due to strong consumer and enterprise demand.
Lenovo ranked second, showing 32.7% YoY growth in consumer shipments and 6.3% in commercial, boosted by solid e-tail demand and a successful SMB strategy. Dell Technologies, in third, faced a 15.9% decline in commercial desktops due to pricing pressures but achieved 6.4% growth in the consumer segment, aided by a successful back-to-school campaign.
Acer Group, fourth, grew 38.3% YoY, leading the desktop category with a 27.6% share and benefiting from key government and BFSI orders. Asus, in fifth place, saw 5.4% overall growth and a notable 131.7% increase in the commercial segment, driven by a focus on commercial expansion and offline presence.
“This is the fourth consecutive quarter of YoY growth for the consumer segment,” said Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager, IDC India & South Asia. He noted that the school and college campaigns lead to strong demand in the e-tail channel during online sales. Vendors also stocked up in preparation for Independence Day sales, significantly increasing consumer PC shipments.
Commenting on the outlook, Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President, Devices Research, IDC India, South Asia & ANZ, attributed the market rise to the onset of AI PCs and several launches in the last few months.
He stated, “While AI PCs may not bring significant consumer demand in the near term, they are likely to make gamers and content creators consider an AI PC in the medium term. AI PCs will also drive refresh commercial orders from 3Q2024 onwards.”
