“Electrifying Rural Mobility- Converting Traditional Bicycles Into E-Bikes”

In a conversation with Nitisha Dubey from EFY, Gursaurabh Singh, the Founder of Dhruv Vidyut, discusses their conversion kit, which can transform any conventional vehicle into an electric one.


Q. What does Dhruv Vidyut do?

A. Our company, incorporated in 2018 and based in Delhi, has developed a retrofit kit that effortlessly converts any pedal-driven vehicle, such as a bicycle, into an electric-powered one without requiring modifications.

Q. What makes Dhruv Vidyut’s retrofit kit unique?

A. This retrofit kit, not available anywhere else globally, is designed to be compatible with a wide range of bicycles, tricycles, and rickshaws—anything that runs on pedals—each with unique features. While the concept of bicycles and e-bicycles for commuting is common in other countries, it is often too expensive for the average person. We have manufactured everything in-house to address this issue, focusing on quality and affordability. Our kit is waterproof, fireproof, and rustproof and has modern components like USB charging capability. It can support a load of up to 170 kg and offers location tracking and battery monitoring features. Essentially, it enhances the functionality of a bicycle, acting as a generator when pedalled.

Q. What are Dhruv Vidyut’s kit variants and their prices?

A. Customers can simply fill out an online form. We’ll reach out to them once we’re ready to book their order. For payment, our website will request a referral code from pre-selected customers, which we will provide. After entering the code, they can proceed with their order. We have partnered with various logistics companies for delivery, and installation is straightforward. If a customer requires a technician, we can arrange one. Our kits are available in two variants, priced at ₹10,000 and ₹13,999, with the only difference being the battery capacity and range. The 6AH battery ranges from 18 to 20 km, while the 10AH battery provides 36 to 40 km. Additional services, like technician support, may incur extra charges. We also offer after-sales services.

Q. Who is the primary target market?

A. Our primary focus is on rural areas, which can be a challenging market to enter. Fortunately, a viral video helped raise awareness about our product, increasing interest and enquiries.

Q. What are the top ordering states?

A. Most of our orders come from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

Q. What are Dhruv Vidyut’s current sales figures and future goals?

A. We sell over 1500 units monthly and aim to reach 8500 units a month by year-end. Our team consists of 20 people, including permanent and contractual staff.

Q. What level of growth have you attained?

A. We have around 6000 pre-bookings and over 60-65 dealers have expressed interest in partnering with us. These achievements are all organic, without any advertising spending. Investors, dealers, and customers are actively seeking us out. Given the sector’s slow pace, our current focus is solely on manufacturing.

Q. How long does the device last?

A. The device is designed to last a lifetime, although the battery backup may diminish over time, typically starting to decline after about five years. However, the batteries are replaceable.

Q. Is there any plan to collaborate with vehicle manufacturers?

A. Our focus is not on revenue generation but on societal transformation. Currently, there is limited activity in R&D, and few companies have the necessary resources. Many companies simply assemble products using components purchased from outside. When developing a product, we aim to add value with regular updates. If we sell our product through a company, the process will involve distributors, dealers, and agents. Each entity in the automobile industry typically takes a 12% to 15% margin in addition to GST. Our primary concern is the impact of these costs on end customers. We are interested in partnering with a company that can provide ongoing innovation and navigate these complexities effectively.

Q. What challenges has your business encountered?

A. The mechanical industry poses a significant challenge as we struggle to find mechanical engineers. The R&D sector is also a major concern for us. While marketing was initially challenging, we have since resolved this issue. Selling in rural areas is feasible, but servicing and raising consumer awareness about electric vehicles remain challenges. Additionally, funding is also an issue for us.

Q. What is the production expansion plan?

A. We are looking to expand our manufacturing operations and scale up production. We welcome partnerships with companies that can assist us in this endeavour. We aim to increase production to the point where we sell millions of units monthly.
