Monday, February 10, 2014: For the first time in India, Electronics Bazaar presents the ‘Top 100 Electronics Hardware Companies’ in the country. Earlier, whenever rankings of electronics companies have been done in India, the consumer electronics and IT firms have hogged the limelight. Although electronics hardware companies in India are doing quite well considering the hurdles they have to cross at every step—whether it means buying components at a higher cost or fighting against the high volume of electronics imports—somehow, the consumer electronics and IT companies steal the show, in the rankings game. Hence, Electronics Bazaar has decided to keep the consumer electronics companies and the IT hardware companies out of these rankings, and concentrate purely on the core electronics hardware firms.
Another significant decision has been to include all the companies dealing in electronics hardware—the manufacturers, dealers, distributors, systems integrators, etc. Again, this is the first time that the dealers and distributors of electronics hardware have been included in a ranking along with the manufacturers.
Performance scenario
Since we are ranking the electronics hardware companies for the first time, something that will become a regular annual affair from now onwards, we did not compare the performance of the companies with their previous years’ track record.
Overall, the companies performed well as, out of 100 companies, 81 have reported profits. The ranking includes companies from various verticals like automation, batteries, cables, components, connectors, equipment, EMS, lighting, PCBs, power electronics, security and surveillance, test and measurement, semiconductors, solar and telecom hardware.
Challenges faced
It is surprising that many companies, including the giants in their own domains, do not file their turnovers with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), on time, or for many years. Some do file their balance sheets, but do not reveal their revenues. Then there are companies that do not file their complete turnover. Hence, some companies that could have featured in our ranking or been ranked at a higher spot, failed to do so.
Today, the trend is for companies to have multiple businesses, in different verticals. And some of these businesses do not cater to the electronics industry. However, these companies file just one consolidated revenue figure, making it difficult to ascertain the turnover of their electronics business alone. For example, some of the major manufacturers of wires and cables could not be included because they also specialise in electrical applications.
Methodology
This list of the Top 100 companies was compiled using revenue figures sourced directly from the companies or their balance sheets published on websites like the Bombay Stock Exchange and the MCA. The consolidated revenue for the previous financial year was taken. As gross turnover may not be the ideal reflection of a company’s performance, efforts have been made to provide profit/loss figures as well.
Disclaimer:While the EB editorial team has taken the utmost care to contact all possible sources to make the rankings comprehensive, we may have inadvertently left out a few companies. We solicit suggestions to make this report even better in the coming years.
