Tata Grup’s ambitious foray into the semiconductor industry is gaining further traction, as the conglomerate reportedly holds talks with international firms for potential partnerships on the chip front. This also includes firms from Taiwan.

A report by Business Standard stated, while citing a close source, that the firm has opened a separate channel for tie-ups.

The Taiwanese companies the conglomerate is eyeing collaboration with includes namely Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), for chip manufacturing in India.

The Tata’s are also in talks with three Southern India states to set up the corporate’s semiconductor OSAT unit. Once finalized, Tata’s OSAT unit might be set up either in Telangana, Tamil Nadu or Karnataka. The setup might also mean investment to the tune of $300 million in the finalized state.

The group had recently appointed Dr Randhir Thakur as director. Dr Thakur was earlier leading Intel’s supply chain operations. Raja Manickam, the founder of Tessolve Semiconductors, has already joined Tata as CEO of its OSAT unit.

This comes as the Centre approves a Rs 76,000 incentive scheme for building the semiconductor industry in the country. The program, as per the government, will usher in a new era in electronics manufacturing by providing a globally competitive incentive package to companies in semiconductors and display manufacturing as well as design.

The Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme shall extend product design linked incentive of up to 50 per cent of eligible expenditure and product deployment linked incentive of six to four per cent on net sales for five years.

India already has a PLI in existence that promises to reward such ATMP/OSAT units with incentives based on production. Dubbed Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), the scheme was launched in 2020.
