MoRTH Proposes Exemption Of Registration Charges For EVs

Comments from the general public and all stakeholders have been sought within a period of thirty days from the date of issuance of this draft notification, MoRTH further added

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed the exemption of battery-operated vehicles from payment of fee for issuance or renewal of registration certificates.

The draft notification read, “The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification dated 27th May 2021, further to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 proposing to exempt Battery Operated Vehicles (BOV) from payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of Registration Certificate (RC) and assignment of new registration mark. This has been notified to encourage e- mobility.”

This comes as the government accelerates measures to support e-mobility in the country, encouraging a shift to electric vehicles and other green energy mobility. It had recently approved a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for the manufacturing of EV batteries in the country to facilitate their fast production and adoption in the country.

Comments from the general public and all stakeholders have been sought within a period of thirty days from the date of issuance of this draft notification, MoRTH further added.
