Envision AESC already has a production facility in Kanagawa, Japan, with an annual capacity of 2.6 GWh
Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co is reportedly partnering with Envision AESC Group, a Chinese battery manufacturer, to build battery plants for electric vehicles in Japan and the United Kingdom for which it will invest over 200 billion yen ($1.82 billion).
Citing Japanese newspaper Nikkei, a Reuters report said that Nissan will start turning out batteries in two new plants by 2024, aiming for a total capacity sufficient to power 700,000 EVs per year. According to Nikkei, both plants will be new production facilities rather than expansions of existing ones.
“Nissan will continue to accelerate electrification toward carbon neutrality, however, we have no further plans to announce at this time,” a Nissan spokeswoman said.
Envision AESC already has a production facility in Kanagawa, Japan, with an annual capacity of 2.6 GWh.
In 2018, Nissan had sold its battery subsidiary AESC to Envision Group, but still holds a 20 per cent minority stake. The battery company, which has since traded under the name Envision AESC, operates a plant in the United States as well as in the UK and Japan. Envision is the world’s seventh-largest supplier of EV batteries.
The publication added that all batteries produced in the plants will be supplied to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.
