Based in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, the plant has enough land to expand its annual capacity to 5 lakh units
Electric scooter manufacturer Ather Energy hopes to treble its annual capacity of e-scooters to about 3 lakh units by the end of FY23, provided the ongoing demand trend continues, as per a company official.
The electric scooter manufacturer, which is also funded by HeroMoto Corp and Sachin and Binny Bansal, rolls out much lesser units than its current production capacity, which lies at just over 1 lakh annually. Based in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, the plant has enough land to expand its annual capacity to 5 lakh units.
Co-founder and Ather Energy CEO Tarun Mehta told PTI, “Currently, we can roll out 9,200 units a month from the Hosur plant that we commissioned in February. Given the rise in demand/enquiries now, we are planning to treble our capacity…by the end of the next fiscal.”
However, the company expects to reach the full capacity of the first phase by this financial year. Currently covering an area of 1.2 lakh sq. ft, the first phase is expected to span across to 4 lakh sq ft and is thus, hoping to treble production by the end of the fiscal of 2023, said Mehta.
Mehta added that the plant at Hosur also has a Li-ion batteries unit for which it has tied up with Chennai-based Sanmina for electronic components.
At present, the automaker produces a sole model, Ather 450X, which costs Rs 1.5 lakh. As per reports, Ather’s sales numbers increased by 30 per cent from 2019 and stood at 2,972 units sold in 2020.
