Telecom operator Bharti Airtel, as part of its aim to grow its green energy footprint, has commissioned a captive solar power plant in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh to fulfil the energy requirements of its core and edge data centres in the state.
The company released a statement announcing that the 14MWp facility is the first of two power plants being established in the state in association with AMP Energy. The second one will be established in Begampur and is expected to begin functioning from the next quarter. Airtel had recently acquired a 26 per cent equity stake in AMP Solar Evolution.
Mission to reduce carbon footprint
The teleco further stated, “Airtel is aligned to the Paris Climate Accord. It benchmarks against global standards and transparently publishes the progress it makes against the targets it has set itself.”
Airtel added that it aims to meet over 50 per cent of Nxtra data centres’ power input in the fiscal of 2022 through renewable energy sources. This move is consistent with Airtel’s mission to reduce its carbon footprint. Nxtra by Airtel’ currently operates 10 large and 120 edge data centres across India.
