Global sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment by original equipment manufacturers were projected by SEMI to increase 16 per cent compared to $59.6 billion in 2019 and register a new industry record of $68.9 billion in 2020

Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments in 2020 increased while revenue remained unchanged from 2019 at $11,170 million, the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) reported in its year-end analysis of the silicon wafer industry. Silicon shipments totaled 12,407 million square inches (MSI), compared to 11,810 MSI shipped in 2019, a rebound in volume of five per cent year over year, recovering close to the historic high set in 2018.

“2020 silicon wafer shipment growth was driven by healthy 300mm demand and a strong second half of 2020 despite disruptions to the semiconductor industry caused by COVID-19,” said Neil Weaver, chairman SEMI SMG and vice president, Product Development and Applications Engineering at Shin Etsu Handotai America.

Global sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment by original equipment manufacturers were projected by SEMI to increase 16 per cent compared to $59.6 billion in 2019 and register a new industry record of $68.9 billion in 2020. The growth is expected to continue with the global semiconductor manufacturing equipment market reaching $ 71.9 billion in 2021 and $76.1 billion in 2022.

“Both the front end and the back end semiconductor equipment segments are expected to power the expansion. The wafer fab equipment segment – which includes wafer processing, fab facilities, and mask/reticle equipment – is projected to rise 15 per cent to reach $59.4 billion in 2020, followed by four per cent and six per cent growth in 2021 and 2022, respectively,” read SEMI’s official relase.

It continued, “The foundry and logic segments, which account for about half of total wafer fab equipment sales, will see a mid-teens percentage increase this year to reach $30 billion in spending driven by investments in leading-edge technologies. Spending on NAND flash manufacturing equipment will surge 30 per cent this year, surpassing $14 billion, while DRAM is expected to lead the expansion in 2021 and 2022.”
