A report by the Economic Times said that British Telecom group BT said that the company will suffer from a £500 million hit after the UK government restricted Huawei’s role to develop 5G network. The report added taht BT said in a statement that the cost will be spread over five years.
According to the report, BT chief executive Philip Jansen said in a statement that the company is in a process of reviewing the guidance in detail. It will determine the full impact on the company’s plan. At this time, the company estimates an impact of around £500 million over the next five years.
Exclude Huawei from “core” parts of the network
Jansen added that the company welcomed the government’s decision. He stated that the priority should be the security of the UK’s communications infrastructure. The company said that the move will require it to make changes to the company’s own network. Britain decided to exclude Huawei from “core” parts of the network and put a 35 per cent restriction to Huaawei’s share in the market.
A statement from the government said that mobile operators in the UK will be able to use Huawei equipment in their 5G networks. It also added that the company will be excluded from “security-critical” core areas.
