Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman Ram Sewak Sharma said that India will no longer lag behind the technology curve following the timely launch of fifth-generation or 5G networks. He added that the country has reached a stage where technology develops in India first. With 5G, the country will no longer lag behind the technology curve.
Funds scarcity and low fibre backhaul issues remain
Sharma also pointed out that challenges still remain. These include funds scarcity and low fibre backhaul to deploy the next generation technology in India. He added that there are less than a third of mobile towers connected to fibre backhaul if compared to China that has more than 80 per cent connected.
Telecom sector not a money-making machine for local bodies
He also stated that the telecom sector should be treated as ‘strategic’ to serve citizens. Issues like the Right-of-Way (RoW) also needs to be set right. He further added that the telecom sector should not be considered as a money-making machine for local bodies. according to him, some of the key features of next generation technology are low-latency communications, huge throughput, and machine-to-machine communication.
