According to Business Standard, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that he has discussed the 5G issue during the second edition of the 2+2 ministerial dialogue between India and the US.
The dialogue
Pompeo further stated that during the dialogue, representatives from both the countries discussed the risks China-made 5G communication networks to India and the US. The representatives of the dialogues also discussed China’s exploitative economic activities in the Indo-Pacific region.
US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has warned India overusing Huawei’s 5G equipment. According to Ross, the U.S. hopes that India “does not inadvertently subject itself to untoward security risk” by using 5G equipment from the Chinese tech giant.
He stated, “Anybody who thinks we are doing this for protectionism simply doesn’t know the facts. We hope that our geopolitical partner India does not inadvertently subject itself to untoward security risk.”
He further added, “In 5G, if there is a penetration, if there is, in fact, a backdoor, it’s going to infiltrate the whole system. So the proportionality of risk, we think, is very considerable.”
