According to a recent report by ET, Samsung India has outsourced the production of some smartphone models to an Indo-Chinese contract manufacturing joint venture.
Earlier this month, Samsung Electronics Vice-Chairman Lee Jae-Yong the son of Samsung Group’s chief Lee Kun-hee, was in India to discuss the business plans. The company has stopped the mobile phone manufacturing in China.
Three years ahead of schedule
People familiar with the development told the news daily that Samsung has already begun exporting India-made phones to middle East, Africa, and Vietnam, almost three years ahead of schedule.
He further stated that the South Korean company was in talks with other contract manufacturers as well to expand local production, since its existing capacity is running at full and contract manufacturing route would help it meet the high demand that some of its popular models such as A and M series.
First contract
An official told ET that among the first contracts given out, DBG Technology India Pvt Ltd will be making about 1.5 million smartphones a month of a model.
According to a recent report by Counterpoint Research, the company’s smartphone shipments increased from 20 per cent in October-December 2018 to 25 per cent in April-June 2019 period.
