MediaTek generates around 20-25 per cent annual revenue from the smart devices in India and eyes to join with AI-based startups for business expansion
Semiconductor major, MediaTek is planning to partner with Indian software firms to advance on Artificial Intelligence-based applications ahead of 5G adoption in the country. The Taiwanese chipmaker believes that AI will be in high demand with the emergence of the new age technology.
5G solutions
T L Lee, General Manager, Wireless Communication, MediaTek, said that the company’s 5G solutions are slated to debut in India in 2019. He informed that the work would start with telecom carriers and that the company had kept India on its priority list in case of 5G field trials. Lee added that MediaTek was eyeing to increase its engagement in India, especially in sectors like telecom, consumer electronics and Internet of Things (IoT).
Plans
MediaTek is planning to set up labs and research centres to carry out the research and development works in India. Currently, the company has a strength of 700 people, which will be raised with more investments in the future in the technology segment in the country.

The company has collaborations with global firms like Google and Facebook and is currently exploring to partner with startups that focus on AI-based applications for India. Lee considers AI to be the next big demand when 5G arrives in India as these solutions offer great help in customizing devices as per the requirement of users. The firm considers India as its second-largest market as it generates a revenue of 20-25 per cent in the smart devices segment.
In the India Mobile Congress 2018, MediaTek released its AI-based Helio P70 with a built-in central processing unit for computing functions and a graphical processing unit for multimedia applications.
