The market of telecommunications has witnessed an alarming growth in the last couple of years and this has in a way helped the UPS market. Most of the UPS players are bullish about their growth in the coming years, thanks to the telecommunication boom. The penetration in the rural market is still very low, so we can safely say that in the next one decade growth in this sector would be around 20 to 25 per cent.

Sunday, January 18, 2009: According to N.K. Verma, director, Parker Power, “The telecom market is growing at the fastest pace. Power conditioning is essential for any such sector; but, due to placement of telecom equipments in every nook and corner of country, over and above power conditions are not good in our country and equipments are sensitive to this. We are supplying our products to this market through TSPs and direct operators as well. We are supporting those power system manufacturers who are delivering as a backup source.” Sunil Jain, manager, marketing, Microtek International, “Telecom in India is the fastest growing sector and the requirement for all connected equipments is also growing side by side. Because of tough/erratic Indian power situation, reliable and safe backup solution is a must and Microtek as a leader in power backup solutions is obviously doing good business for this sector.”
He adds, “The growth in telecom is going to make a long-term effect on the UPS market, with companies like Microtek benefiting more because of its own unique wide spread after-sales service backup network.” Yogesh Dua, director, UTL adds, “The growth in the Indian telecom sector and the IT sector is directly reflected in the growth of the UPS category. We are moving towards a borderless world where staying connected 24/7 is of prime importance. However, the unstable power situation in the country acts as a hurdle to this objective. The market in India consists of both branded and local players. The local players attract buyers who are price conscious. But when it comes to performance, reliability and after-sales service, the organised players have an upper hand.

Now the industry has grown big and many players have started using indigenous products because of their economical viability and suitability for Indian power conditions.”
Technological advancement
According to Jain, the new technologies in telecom as well as generally are going to be energy efficient and solar based. Microtek is already working on these areas and is soon coming out with a highly energy efficient range of UPS. Dua adds, “Today a UPS is not looked upon as a box but is seen as a solution. In order to sustain in a highly volatile competitive market, it has become imperative for vendors to offer and upgrade to the best possible technology available in the market and look for the device offering foolproof protection against voltage fluctuations industries are looking at it as an answer to their backup power woes giving them adequate time to save files and run the shut down process. As networks are becoming more complex, far-flung and are managed from remote locations,
UPS needs to be equipped with support for heterogeneous network management protocols and be flexible enough to incorporate diagnostics and predictive failure technologies, such as SNMP, RS-232. We have observed in the enterprise UPS market that people want to embrace new technologies at par with the worldwide trends. Transitions from transformer technology to transformerless technologies, or for that matter, DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology that has been widely used are the current trends.”
Verma mentions, “The major challenge is efficiency and longer backup, so we are aggressively developing high efficiency systems those emit less heat to the environment and less conditioning would require in this contest. We are in the process to develop outdoor systems for further better support. Mainly companies are working on surge suppression, power distribution units, remote power management systems, extended run time UPS solutions for long outages etc.”
Kumar says, “Most of the telecommunication applications require DC UPS with large back-up time, i.e. there is a requirement of uninterruptible DC power supply for the transmitter as well as the receiver. This calls for high degree of enclosure protection class of IP 42 AND IP 54 as against the normal enclosure class of IP 20 and IP 21.”
Government initiatives
“UPS sector is not controlled by the govt. directly except for some generic requirements of government sector companies like BSNL. With cheap imports and bulk manufacturing in other Asian countries the government could hardly do anything to support the Indian Industry. As zero per cent duty is encouraging China manufacturing more to India manufacturing sector. We must have an open debate on this”, says Verma.
Jain agrees to this and adds, “The government is not doing much, but the market forces, like declining rupee is making the imports unviable and is helping Indian manufacturers in keeping an upper edge.” Dua mentions, “As we know that UPS has become safe, reliable, clean and uninterrupted power solution in international arena, solar compatibility of UPS makes it more useful than any other substitute of power, most importantly UPS not only protects the data but also saves environment from pollution. Instead of knowing all these factors government is not providing as much attention in to these industries as they should.
