Electric vehicle manufacturer, Sunra, eyes the electric two-wheelers market in India after studying the EV policies of the country
Sunra, Chinese electric vehicles manufacturing company, is interested in setting up a plant in India. Victor Lu, General Manager, Sunra, informed that the company had been following the EV policies and it expressed its interest to invest in a manufacturing facility in Bengaluru.
Focus on electric bikes
While major automakers have announced about introducing electric cars, Sunra’s focus is electric bikes. The GM said that the company viewed India as an emerging market for electric bikes and it wanted to explore the segment. He added that the rising pollution levels in Delhi and other main cities would result in switching to e-bikes in the future.
The Chinese EV firm has partnered with 16 private companies in Delhi. Currently, around six e-bike models of Sunra are under the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) test and two of its models are available in some of the showrooms.
Other producers
Two-wheeler vehicles in the electric segment are set to contribute to the new industry. Popular brands like Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor Company, Royal Enfield and Suzuki Motorcycle India have started the whole process of electric bikes. Yamaha Motor Research and Development India (YMRI), in association with Yamaha Motor Corporation (YMC), Japan, has also been working on its two-wheeler range for India as well as the international market.
India has been encouraging electric vehicles in India. The government has been promoting EVs to adopt an environment-friendly way to commute. The goal is to introduce electric buses, cars, bikes and thereby cut down pollution levels.
The EV market in India has been drawing global attention for investments. It has also accelerated the local manufacturing companies. The country’s ‘Make in India’ initiative has further attracted investors in China. Sunra is one of the recent names included I the EV market. It exports products to around 70 countries, including India.
