MeitY has approved a proposal submitted by the Global Innovation and Technology Alliance (GITA) to provide funding and support to the electronics industry and academic institutions to do collaborative research
By EB Bureau
The Gita project aims to promote innovation, IP, R&D and the commercialisation of products, in the electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) sector by providing funding support to a company for doing collaborative research with an academic institute in priority areas, with a timeline of not more than two years.
Three priority areas of large area flexible electronics, the Internet of Things (IoT) and technology for internal security are initially being supported by MeitY for funding. A maximum of nine R&D projects are to be funded under the scheme.
The total funding of the project is ₹ 156 million for a period of two years. The project envisages joint collaboration for bilateral industrial R&D, and requests for proposals (RFPs) have been launched with South Korea, Finland, UK, Spain and Canada. The proposals must aim for innovation, IP and commercialisation of products in ESDM, conceptualised by Indian companies/startups in joint collaboration with industry partners in the respective countries.
The jointly approved proposals are being funded under the scheme with a cap of ₹ 15 million per project. The RFPs with South Korea, Finland and UK have been closed after four, seven and eleven project proposals were received, respectively, from these countries. One proposal each has been recommended jointly for funding under the India-Finland and India-UK call for proposals. The RFP for joint R&D between India and Spain was closed on June 17, 2016, and evaluation of the proposals is going on.
The RFP under the India-Canada joint collaborative industrial R&D programme closes on August 31. Interested participants from Indian industry, particularly companies operating in the above priority areas, may apply under the India-Canada Joint Industrial R&D Programme and contact GITA to identify suitable industry partners in Canada.
