Mobile phone manufacturing in India will reach 500 million units in a span of two years with the backing of talent as well as an incentive policy. This was stated by the telecom secretary at the Department of Telecom (DoT).
India has produced 100 million phones this year. This is more than double when compared to 45 million units in 2015.
According to Telecom Secretary, J S Deepak, “The number of phones being manufactured was 10 million sometime back (which increased) to 45 million last year and 100 million this year. The time has come when we will reach 500 million, may be in 2 years.”
The secretary also added that besides phones, the differential tariff is assisting domestic makers in getting into other areas including medical electronics, consumer electronics as well as broadband equipment, set up boxes. The government is trying to bring down the import of electronic products and meet requirement of domestic market via indigenous production.
It has also got proposals amounting to Rs. 1.13 lakh crore in the electronics manufacturing segment from popular brands under the modified special incentive package scheme (M-SIPS). The scheme provides capital subsidies to large investors in electronics manufacturing and system design.
