February 2, 2015: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has approved tenders for 12 new solar projects across different locations in the city. The total capacity of projects will stand at 540KW and will be set up with an investment of Rs 45.8 million.
These projects will be installed on various SMC buildings. These projects have been approved by the standing committee. SMC has already set up three wind power stations, and is now concentrating on harnessing solar energy.
The projects will be set up, operated and maintained by Vari Energies Private Limited for a period of ten years. SMC gets Rs 11.36 per unit for each unit of electricity that it produces.
SMC aims to be self-sufficient to produce energy required through non-conventional resources by 2020. Nearly 35 per cent of this has already been installed.
