Tuesday, December 16, 2014: The world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, Foxconn International Holdings Mobile, a unit of Hon Hai Precision Industry, has confirmed about ending its mobile phone facility operation in India on 24 December.
Reports reveal that the company could not meet the future manufacturing investment ventures in India and has thus claimed that the plant is being shut down because of limited orders and a changing clientèle. It said, “This action is being taken due to a change in (the) facility’s customer base and a related change in the manufacturing requirements of our customers in India.”
It further added, “We are working with the government and the labour unions to ensure that this action is carried out in a manner that follows all laws and regulations and is fair to the employees who will be affected by this move.”
The company’s Chennai plant was said to be heavily dependent upon Nokia for its business and perhaps after the suspension of Nokia’s operations in the region, it has witnessed aggressive losses in its operations, it employees over 1,700 people.
