Friday, October 10, 2014: Blue LED (Light Emitting Diode) has wide capability than your imagination. These diodes are used in smart TV, smartphones, tablets, lamps etc. Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura are the inventors of this Blue LED. Nobel Assembly has announced a Nobel Prize to these inventors of Blue LED.
Nobel Prize is given to the greatest innovation that has positive impact on the society. Blue LEDs made the discovery of white LEDs, which are used in bulb and lamps. White LED lamps are very energy efficient yet powerful. LED lamp emits light at 300 lumen per watt while, regular bulb emits at 16 lumen per watt and fluorescent light at 70 lumen per watt.
Blue LEDs have wide range of usage, it can be used to sterilize the water. UV light uses LEDs, they’re used to destroy microorganisms present in water. LED lamp can be used in remote places where there is no electricity. Solar charged battery is good enough to power the LED lamp. LED lamp has absolutely no environmental hazard unlike other power sources.
LEDs have unimaginable capabilities. Their colour can be controlled using computer, the light emitted by LED can influence the growth of plants. They can be used in greenhouse to nurture the growth. The discovery of LEDs is just 20 years old but it has impacted human lives in a great positive way.
