In July 2014, National Instruments introduced the NI SOM that combines the Xilinx Zynq all programmable system on a chip (SoC) with supporting components such as memory on a small PCB. It features a complete middleware solution and a ready-to-go, integrated Linux-based real-time operating system (RTOS). The NI SOM gives design teams the option to customise a SOM without the increased time and risks of developing custom software. According to the company, it enables design teams to deploy reliable, complex embedded systems faster because it is based on and has the same rigorous design standards as the LabVIEW reconfigurable I/O (RIO) architecture.
