Tuesday, September 09, 2014: Energy efficient light emitting diode (LED) lights will illuminate the entire capital city of Tripura, Agartala. This way Agartala will become the first city in the northeast region to have LED illumination.
Ashutosh Jindal, state urban development secretary, said that Ministry of Power’s PSU, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), was all set to replace the existing lighting system of Agartala with LED. In the eastern region, Agartala will be the second city after Kolkata where street lights are LED. Till date only Hyderabad and Vijayawada have LED lighting systems on the streets.
Jindal said, “We are expecting the signing of MoU with EESL by next week to install modern, energy efficient streetlights on the city roads. This will not only reduce our energy bills, it also provides better lighting on streets and gives a modern look.” The state government is not going to bear the capital investment for the project and EESL will undertake the task on its own shoulders.
EESL and Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) are expected to sign the MoU for the lighting project and EESL will undertake the replacement project on VIP Road from Raj Bhawan to Agartala airport. A technical survey has been conducted by EESL on the roads and the company is ready to start the work after the MoU is signed. In Kolkata LED has not been installed yet. But in Agartala the replacement will be done on a whole. EESL will bear the capital investment also and the money will be refunded by AMC in seven years after a savings is created from electricity bills.
