Monday, June 23, 2014:Karnataka IT and Biotechnology Minister S R Patil has asked the hardware sector to give the much-desired push to electronics manufacturing in the state. The minister has called for boosting the capacity of manufacturing electronics goods.
Addressing a workshop, Patil said, “If we do not build capacity to manufacture electronics goods on a mass scale, the country may have to pay a heavy price in future, as we continue to import more than indigenising their production.”
Patil expressed his concern over the surging import of electronics components, including processors, semiconductors and motherboards, which is likely to surpass that of petroleum by 2020. It is noteworthy that over 65 per cent of electronics goods in the country is imported. Patil said, “As technologies change rapidly due to research and innovations roll out new products, the domestic industry has to keep pace with them to sustain and grow.”
The minister was speaking at the workshop organised by Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (Keonics) in association with Varnaaz Technologies Ltd. Meanwhile, Karnataka government is also working to set up two more electronics manufacturing clusters in Bangalore and Mysore.
