Monday, May 19, 2014: Along with the electronics industry, the renewable energy industry is pinning its hopes high with the newly elected Modi government. The industry feels that the BJP government will prove fruitful and it will stand at an advantage courtesy the fact that Narendra Modi knows the industry pretty well.
Industry experts also believe that Narendra Modi government could also revive the ‘Non Conventional Energy Cell’, which has been existing for a couple of years now. A member of the cell was hopeful that it will now be rejuvenated and expanded now. In his role of being the chief minister of Gujarat, Modi promoted solar energy and witnessed the creation of 900 MW of solar power capacity in the state.
Modi also headed the ‘rent-your-roof’ initiative in Gujarat, where households rent their roofs for companies like SunEdison to put up solar projects. According to a Business Line report, Dr Arunabha Ghosh, CEO of Council on Energy, Environment and Water, said that ‘renewable energy’ sector can expect a “significant push” within the “strategic focus”. Dr Ghosh hoped that the the new government may address the issues including land acquisition and financing for renewable energy projects.
It is worth mentioning here that BJP’s renewable energy cell is currently active in just a few states including Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha. But with the new government, it is expected to be expanded across the country, with district level units.
