Tuesday, May 06, 2014: DeitY has given in principle approval for evolving setting up of “National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security (NCETIS). A proposal in this regard has been submitted by Prof Abhay Karandikar, IIT Bombay and the same was considered by a meeting of various stakeholders including Central and State Police officers, R&D institutions, academia and industry held on 23rd Jan 2014 under the Chairmanship of Shri J Satyanarayana, Secretary, DeitY.
The National Policy on Electronics, interalia, envisages setting up of various National Centres of Excellence, with the objective of developing critical level of expertise, R&D capability, IPR etc. One of the essential aspects of the proposed Centres is involvement of the industry in setting up of these Centres and ensuring the projects taken up have commercial demand. Even though the Centre is proposed to be housed in IIT Bombay, as a National Centre envisages to support research by other academic and research institutions in the area.
The main objectives of the proposed National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security include undertaking projects involving technology innovation to address the challenges of homeland security.
Based on the feedback received from various stakeholders, IIT Bombay was requested to prepare a Detailed Project Report. IIT Bombay has submitted the DPR and the same is under consideration of DeitY. Next steps by DeitY include preparation of EFC memo and seeking approval of the EFC regarding the project.
