Saturday, April 19, 2014: Electronics hardware manufacturing is one sector that has been identified as suffering from sluggish growth and import dependence. In spite of being the fastest growing sector across the world, and with our own markets growing at a scorching pace, India has not been able to realise any benefits. So the government has launched a well thought out campaign to stimulate the domestic ecosystem for the electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) sector. This package, rolled out under the National Policy for Electronics 2012, consists of financial support for manufacturers and investors in the sector, support for infrastructure development for manufacturing, preferential market access for Indian-made goods when it comes to government purchases and the formalisation of quality and safety standards for imports. But this is not all. Mechanisms are being established to support R&D, e-waste management and skills development so that the entire ecosystem is in place to drive excellence in the ESDM sector.
It is heartening to see that during the last 12 months (since January 2013), there has been considerable progress on all fronts with positive developments in the implementation of the above policies. Here’s the status of the different sectors of the electronics industry.
