Wednesday, March 26, 2014: The country needs massive reforms to stably build a renewable energy platform and also provide help to public sector undertakings (PSU) in implementing them. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is rolling the idea to develop a separate policy for PSUs, to set up solar and wind energy power projects in India.
The increasing interest of PSUs to setting up renewable energy power plants has encouraged the Ministry to develop specific schemes and policies, in collaboration with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
According to TOI report, Bharath Reddy, senior manager (PV), SECI said, “There is a lot of interest and these are cash-rich companies, so there is a proposal for a separate scheme under which public sector companies can invest. However, it is still in the discussion stage.”
Many PSUs have proposed installation of wind and solar energy projects, with interests from the likes of ONGC, BHEL, NTPC. The 6-PSU 4 GW solar energy project in Rajasthan, is one of the biggest PSU projects, and will be the world’s largest single location solar project once operational. It includes organisations like SECI, BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd), SSL (Sambhar Salt Ltd), PGCIL (Power Grid Corporation of India), SJVNL (Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam) and REIL (Rajasthan Electronics & Instruments Limited).
Furthermore, companies like NTPC is targeting 1,000 MW capacity via the renewable energy sources by 2017. NLC aims 300 MW by 2016.
