Monday, December 23, 2013: Solar energy is clearly the top priority for our country, especially with the depleting sources of traditional form of power. In the latest development, Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has reportedly awarded 8.75 MW of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in nine cities to 22 companies. These companies include Tata Power Solar (Mumbai) and Waaree Energies Pvt. Ltd. (Mumbai).
According to a Solar Server report, this represents the results of a solicitation via the 3rd phase of SECI’s rooftop PV program. In the third phase, SECI has offered contracts to build solar plants- 2 MW of PV plants in Chennai, 1 MW in 8 other cities and less than 1 MW in Chandigarh and Gwalior.
Out of the above list, Chandigarh and Gwalior fell short of their allocation of 1 MW. Coming to the individual contracts, they are for 250–500 kW of capacity. Bidders including Tata and Waaree have already been awarded contracts in multiple cities.
