Wednesday, October 16, 2013: The new technological developments taking place in mobile devices, like smartphones and tablets, have led to advancements in connector technology. The demand for connectors capable of operating in the harshest of working environments is growing significantly, which has also resulted in incremental performance improvements in connectors.
In this section, we feature the new launches in the connectors domain over the last seven months. However, companies like ABB and Vishay Intertechnology have not launched any new connectors in this period.

Launched in August 2013, the high-speed board edge connector (BEC) and optional power connector is suitable for automotive and other such demanding applications.

Key features
The side extensions of the insulation body not only fasten the SMT tabs but also have a threaded seam on both sides that offers the option for additional fastening of the module card. The module card can thus be screwed to the connector, using screws
The larger SMT tabs are used for the ground connection and for the SMT connection—along with the 230 contacts—to the motherboard

Launched in July 2013, the 0.35mm fine pitch board-to-board connector is designed to support slimmer consumer electronic devices. Launched in July 2013, the CCM03-3511 series of smart card connectors provide an increased contact force to withstand shock and high vibration, while the CCM03-3512 features extended soldering pads to withstand a second reflow, upside down.

Key features
Compatible with SIM/SAM cards, these harsh environment connectors meet IEC 512 certification and are resistant to shock, vibration, humidity, and extreme temperatures

With a vibration frequency rating of 10 Hz to 500 Hz, a mechanical life of up to 50,000 cycles in fixed cover configurations, and 10,000 cycles for hinged cover variants, these connectors are ideal for M2M applications.

Available in either six or eight contact variations, hinged or fixed cover designs, as well as pick-and-place and lead-free SMT soldering compatibility.

The connectors have a spoon design that maximises contact area, increasing its reliability and performance

Launched in June 2013, the Har-flexicon series consists of SMD PCB terminals and connectors with 2.54mm spacing, which are suitable for single strand wiring in measurement, control and feedback technology.

These connectors are suitable for the flexible and pluggable connection of single wires onto a printed circuit board. The product range contains solutions for horizontal or vertical plug-in directions to the PCB
For the connection of single wires (wire-to-board), the female connector is available with different connection technologies, e.g., screw connections, spring-cage-connections and IDC connections

Launched in March 2013, these hermetically-sealed circular connectors are for aerospace applications with high differential pressure. These connectors, from API’s Spectrum Control line of products, meet MIL-DTL-38999 fine leak requirements and are ideal for aerospace engine control, or the harsh conditions of hydraulic and caustic environments.

Launched in January 2013, the 9175 and 9176 insulation displacement connector series have been redesigned to simplify and reduce the cost of the wire termination processes used for connecting discrete wire components to a PCB. It also bring power and signals onto a PCB.

Key features
A simplified, one-piece design that enables users to insert discrete wires into the cap without stripping them first, and to simply press the cap down to provide a secure gas-tight termination

Features a plastic cap that retains the contact in position prior to automatic placement and then acts as the assembly tool to terminate the wires, negating the need for special tooling, soldering or crimping

Rated for use in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +125°C. Both series also feature a durability of three cycles
The 9175 IDC series features a current rating of 1A per contact, a voltage rating of 150V AC, and is designed to terminate 26-28AWG wires. The 9176 series features a current rating of 10A per contact, a voltage rating of 300V AC, and is designed to terminate 18-24 AWG wires
