Monday, September 02, 2013: Earlier solar development plans were in full swing in the solar power sector with setting up of 1,800MW of solar photovoltaic capacity. In addition to it, feed-in tariff programme launched by Gujarat initiated the solar movement resulting in the establishment of 800MW of capacity. Moreover, 627MW capacity was installed and 30MW is supposed to be commissioned very soon under the Government of India’s National Solar Mission. But, now Phase II of the National Solar Mission seems to have taken a backseat.
Many states like Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka have come up with their own solar programs. Owing to political hurdle, Andhra Pradesh’s plans have been stalked. The basic foundation of the solar policy in Tamil Nadu that was solar purchase obligation meant for specific consumer classes is pending in the court. Apart from this, projects of 708MW remain to be signed. This is due to a ‘consultative paper’ by the State’s Electricity Regulatory Commission that has suggested a low tariff of Rs 5.78 per unit.
But, this sector has a reason to rejoice for. Around 10,154 villages are receiving solar-based power for Rs 7.14 billion (Rs 714 crore). This data has been collated till June 30 this year. In addition to it, funds have been approved for another 2,500 villages.
