Wednesday, 07 August 2013: In the coming days, small houses in Chandigarh will start sporting battery rooms intended to store and utilize solar energy similar to that in Germany. With the motive of developing Chandigarh into a Solar City, more streetlights will come up that will make use of renewable energy and silicon spray technology.
UT officials meeting headed by UT Administrator Shivraj Patil pointed towards the decision that all government schools and colleges should sport solar power plants on rooftops wherever technically viable. Apart from this, the Chandigarh Housing Board would install solar photovoltaic power plant at houses that comes under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme.
In addition to this, the Municipal Corporation is supposed to take the responsibility of installing solar photovoltaic power plant at their offices, community centers, dispensaries and fire stations in a specified time period.
At the meeting UT officials also discussed about innovative technology in battery storage. “Silicon spray technology” will be used in place of conventional solar panels and therefore, there is a need to explore its possibility.
The director, Science and Technology department, Santosh Kumar informed Patil that solar photovoltaic power plant projects at eight government buildings have been commissioned. The total figure is 500kw capacities. Solar photovoltaic power plants at four different government colleges are being installed. These will be commissioned within two months.
