Wednesday, May 09, 2013: Rechargeable batteries are made with several different combinations of chemicals including lead acid, nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-ion), and lithium ion polymer (Li-ion polymer). A buyer usually looks for a battery that has high energy density, best safety factor, long life in terms of discharge cycles and ease of maintenance. Let’s have a look at the new launches in this domain.

Type: Li-Ion, Brand: Evolute, Manufacturer: Evolute Solutions Pvt Ltd, India

Brand—Evolute (Li-ion)
Brand—Evolute (Li-ion)

Launched in December 2012, the battery management system range consists of Li-Ion battery packs in any desired voltage and capacity. Most commonly used configurations are of 3.7 V, 7.4 V, 11.1 V and 14.8 V. The applications that can be catered to are GPS, handheld, POS systems, e-vehicles, solar lighting, portable medical equipment, remote meters, torch lights, security alarms, cameras, smoke detectors, emergency lighting, etc. All cells are subjected to strict safety, functional and cycle tests.

 Li-ion, Brand: NEC
Li-ion, Brand: NEC

Type: Li-ion, Brand: NEC, Manufacturer: NEC Corporation, Japan

Launched in October 2012, the manganese lithium-ion battery prototype features cathodes that support high voltage operations and an electrolyte solution that improves the stability of high voltage operations. The new cathode and electrolyte solution improves battery energy density by approximately 30 per cent, increases battery capacity and decreases battery weight, all while maintaining a high level of safety, based on the results of safety tests using a multilayer laminate-type cell.

Key features
Use of these cathodes and graphite anodes enables the average operating voltage to increase to a high voltage of 4.5 V from the 3.8 V of existing technologies •These batteries maintain approximately 80 per cent of their original capacity after undergoing tests with 500 full charge and discharge cycles in conditions below room temperature (20°C), while maintaining roughly 60 per cent of their capacity when above room temperature (45°C) •Suppression of gas formation within cells enables significant reduction in the battery swelling ratio to 10 per cent after cycle tests are conducted at above room temperature.

Type: Nickel-metal hydride, Brand: Eneloop, Manufacturer: Sanyo Component Europe GmbH, Germany

Brand—Eneloop (Nickel-metal hydride)
Brand—Eneloop (Nickel-metal hydride)

Launched in September 2012, AA- and AAA-size nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries maintain their capacity even after five years of storage. They also offer an added 20 per cent recharge cycles, which gives them a total of up to 1,800 recharge cycles. The AA-size Ni-MH rechargeable battery has a minimum capacity of 1900 mAh, and the AAA-size Eneloop has a minimum capacity of 750 mAh.

Key features
Low self-discharge technology: These batteries maintain approximately 90 per cent of their capacity after one year of storage •Loop effect: Eneloop is part of the ‘Clean Energy Loop’, where power is generated from clean, renewable solar energy, stored for use when needed in batteries, and conserved or used efficiently for power-driven applications. •Stable discharge voltage: Longer operation times for gadgets with high power consumption
