Monday, May 06, 2013: Power conversion, energy storage, and modularity and scalability are some of the most prominent technological advancements that have taken place in UPS systems. UPS systems are also undergoing developments like digital signal processing (DSP) and space vector modulation (SVM), which make these products sustainable and reliable. UPS systems are also being developed with alternative renewable energy sources. Let’s take a look at some of the recent launches in home UPS systems in 2012-13
Model: 50 VA CFL UPS, Brand: Lzen, Manufacturer: Lzen Electronics, India
Launched in February 2013, Lzen’s 50 VA CFL MOSFET-based high frequency UPS system, with advanced battery charging that gives a backup of approximately three hours when running three CFL bulbs of 11 W with a 12 V 7.5 AH UPS battery.
Key features
– Sleep mode charging preserves the battery and provides a longer back-up period, overload, deep discharge, and overcharge protection facility
– Can light up energy-saving CFL bulbs of up to 45 W
– Being portable, it is ideal for small shops, road-side vendors and households
– Can be charged using solar power
– Can charge the battery from 90 V AC

Model: Solar S-20, Brand: UTL, Manufacturer: upsINVERTER.com, India
Launched in February 2013, the Solar S-20 is powered by micro-digital technology. Available from 800 VA to 5 kVA, the UPS system runs on hybrid technology.
Key features
– A crystal-controlled accurate 50 Hz supply ensures the hassle-free working of appliances
– Has the ability to sense the level of load on it. When subjected to excessive loads, the UPS system enters a stand-by mode during which it keeps on beeping, and when it senses the load has lessened to the specified level, then it turns itself back on, automatically, eliminating the need of manual resetting.
– Provides the battery installed in it with a constant boost charging current until its voltage reaches 14.2 V and the float current then maintains this voltage above 13 V.

Model: SS1060/12V and SS1625/24V, Brand: Microtek, Manufacturer: Microtek International P Ltd, India
Launched in January 2013, the UPS systems are powered by solar energy and are based on digital signal controller (DSC) technology.
Key features
Has dual charging mode: Mains mode and solar mode. Therefore, suitable for areas with long power cuts and rural areas as well
– Has an additional bypass switch which enables the user to isolate the UPS from the mains whenever required
– Up to 250 W solar panel for SS1060/12V model
– Up to 500 W solar panel for SS1625/24V model

Model: CPS Greeny, Brand: Convergence, Manufacturer: Convergence Power Systems Pvt Ltd, India
Launched in December 2012, CPS Greeny can be connected through the mains with a provision for solar charging. When attached with the solar PV module, the batteries gets charged. Once its fully charged, the built-in automatic sensing device (ASD) gets activated and disconnects the AC mains supply to the systems and discharges the battery to a pre-set level. When the battery reaches that level, the AC mains get connected and the batteries will be put for charging through the PV module. At night or in the absence of solar PV connectivity, the ASD gets de-activated and load and charging are fed through the AC mains or battery, which is the same as with a typical home UPS system.
Key features
– Built-in ASD enhances maximum solar usage from this device without compromising the emergency backup
– Latest DSP technology
– Computer compatible mixed load usage
– Maximum optimised charging and discharging

Model: SunSine, Brand: Aplab, Manufacturer: Aplab Limited, India
Launched in November 2012, SunSine is a pure sine wave, high efficiency, solar upgradeable UPS system. The unique solar-ready feature allows the system to be upgraded to a solar power generating system at any point in the future.
Key features
The systems are designed with high frequency switch mode technology using DSP controllers to have lower harmonic distortion, higher crest factor tolerance and dynamic stability, resulting in a smaller footprint
With the help of a bi-directional intelligent inverter and battery charger, the UPS system achieves very high AC-DC and DC-AC conversion efficiency. This helps in reducing losses and lowers utility electric bills
As the peak DC-AC efficiency is more than 92 per cent, the use of the battery AH capacity is optimal. Therefore, the same AH battery provides longer power back-up time compared to lower efficiency inverters. This will reduce the cost of ownership for batteries
With the help of LEECH modules, the solar power is transmitted at higher DC voltage of up to
400 V
