You must be familiar with Mercedes cars. Then you might also know that Mercedes is made under the brand Daimler AG. The auto giant is back in the news, not for an achievement in the world of automobiles, but for a different reason altogether. The Mercedes maker has decided to make use of India’s growing solar power potential by setting up first small-scale rooftop solar power project in Tamil Nadu.
According to an IANS report, the Indian subsidiary of Daimler AG has decided to set-up solar power plant of 300 KW on the rooftop of its warehouse in the region. A statement released by the company said, “Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. (DICV) has set up a 300 KW solar power project on the roof of its parts logistics warehouse at an investment of around Rs 40 million.”
The primary reason behind setting up the solar plant is to facilitate its own power consumption. It has been reported that the rooftop plant will meet 2.8 per cent of the company’s power consumption demand.
The company had recently decided to focus on alternative green energy to generate power globally and the solar power plant falls in line with this philosophy from Daimler. “This is also in-line with DICV’s initiative to create better self-sufficiency in power that reduces dependency on conventional power. DICV will enhance its focus on new and renewable energies,” the statement further added. The solar power plant will be networked with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) soon the report added.
