The WiMax 2010 conference held in New Delhi asserted that industry players are depending heavily on the brisk implementation of WiMax technologies as broadband access becomes increasingly widespread across India. With the recent spectrum auctions that reportedly fetched the government US$ 8.56 billion, India joins 149 countries with commercial WiMax services. Operators are planning a rapid roll out to gain the early mover advantage in a market said to be waiting for access to wireless broadband technology.
P J Thomas, secretary, Department of Telecom, Government of India, and chairman, Telecom Commission, while inaugurating the conference, referred to a programme to connect all villages in a bid to reach out to rural people. “The mobile revolution is now rolling and WiMax will accelerate it,” he said. He also cautioned vendors and operators seeking to set up shop in India to be aware that doing business in India is different from in any other country.
